TB Starting Pitcher #59

Jeffrey Springs allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings for Triple-A Durham on Sunday.

We should always take minor league statlines with a grain of salt because we don’t know what pitchers are working on or how well the defense played behind them. It also was reported that Springs may have been battling a blister or a cut on his finger since he got checked out in the middle of the outing and kept pitching. Perhaps most importantly, Springs did throw 77 pitches in this game, which means he should be up over 80 in his next start, which is good news for his potential return. The Rays won’t rush him back but he may need only one more rehab appearance at most.

Rays selected Westlake HS (TX) INF/OF Theo Gillen with the No. 17 selection of the 2024 MLB Draft.

Gillen is one of the top prep bats in the class and offers a considerable amount of fantasy upside. The 6-foot-2 infielder has dealt with injuries as a prep with a torn labrum and knee injury, but when healthy he shows the ability to make consistent hard contact with a frame that suggests he’ll be able to hit for power at the highest level. His lack of arm strength may move him to center field or second base, but the bat can certainly play there. Gillen will need time as all prep hitters do, but the reward has a chance to be well worth the wait.

Pete Fairbanks escaped a jam in the ninth inning to secure his 17th save in a 2-0 win over the Guardians.

Called on to protect a 2-0 lead, Fairbanks allowed back-to-back singles to start the inning before getting Jose Ramirez to pop out to first, Josh Naylor to line out to center, and David Fry to fly out to left. Both Naylor and Fry made solid contact, but came up empty, and Fairbanks now has 17 saves to go along with a 3.21 ERA heading into the All-Star break.

Ryan Pepiot threw six shutout innings, allowing two hits while striking out four in a win over the Guardians on Sunday.

Pepiot didn’t walk a batter and has now strung together two good performances after a poor start against the Royals at the beginning of the month. The right-hander induced 12 whiffs on 45 swings for a 27 percent whiff rate and 26 percent CSW on the day. He’ll carry a 3.92 ERA into the second half of the season and is one of the top candidates to have a much better second half of the season.

TB Second Baseman #8

Brandon Lowe went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a win over the Guardians on Sunday.

The home run was Lowe’s ninth of the season to go along with 27 RBI in 49 games this season. He has now started five straight games for the Rays, including one against a left-handed pitcher. The 30-year-old hits second or third every time he plays, and has been a solid source of power and RBI in the past. Now that he’s also hitting .329 in 12 games in July, he should be rostered in most deeper formats.

Josh Lowe went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base against the Guardians on Saturday.

The stolen base was Lowe’s eighth of the season. He’s 6-for-32 (.187) with one RBI in 10 games in July. The stolen base was certainly a positive, but Lowe is hitting .217 with a .670 OPS on the year. A far cry from the production we saw out of him last year when he hit .292 with 20 home runs.
Zack Littell

TB Relief Pitcher #52

Zack Littell allowed two runs (one earned) in six innings and got a no-decision against the Guardians on Saturday.

Littell gave up six hits, walked two and struck out three. He bounced back nicely after allowing seven runs against the Rangers in his last start. Littell needed only 87 pitches to get through six innings. He’ll take a 4.26 ERA into the All-Star break.
Taj Bradley

TB Starting Pitcher #45

Taj Bradley struck out eight Guardians across seven innings in a 2-0 win for the Rays on Friday. He allowed just five hits and two walks while securing the win.

This was one of those games that makes people very, very excited about Bradley because he was missing spots left and right, but the Guardians had absolutely no chance against him. He left plenty of fastballs in the middle of the zone that Cleveland couldn’t catch up to let too many splitters dance outside to left-handed batters before putting them away with a good one. He’s been scorching hot for over a month now with 52 strikeouts and just five earned runs across his last 42 innings pitched.

TB Relief Pitcher #47

Jason Adam struck out the side in his only inning of work on Friday against the Guardians earning the save.

Adam was his usual excellent self in this one, dropping nasty sweepers and changeups to make opposing hitters look foolish. His ERA shrunk to a microscopic 1.71, but he only got the save opportunity because Pete Fairbanks threw 28 pitches on Thursday.
Yandy Diaz

TB Third Baseman #2

Yandy Díaz went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI on Friday against the Guardians.

Díaz’s fifth inning double wound up being the last run that came around to score in this one. Slowly but surely his batting average has trickled back up to .276, albeit without the same power he showed last season.
