Mets claimed LHP Alex Young off waivers from the Giants and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse.

It seems the Giants just really wanted Austin Slater gone, as Young was the return in that trade with the Reds a week ago. The journeyman reliever pitched two scoreless innings for Cincinnati earlier this season, and he has a 2.19 ERA in 24 2/3 innings in Triple-A.

Mets designated LHP Tyler Jay for assignment.

Jay had already been back in Triple-A, but this takes him off the 40-man roster. He had allowed four earned runs over 4 2/3 innings in three appearances for the Mets this season. That he had a 2.40 ERA and a 30/4 K/BB in 41 1/3 innings for Triple-A Syracuse might get him claimed off waivers.
Sean Manaea

NYM Starting Pitcher #59

The Mets will have Sean Manaea start Friday versus the Marlins, but they’ve yet to announce the rest of the rotation.

It would be Luis Severino’s turn on Friday, but the Mets are apparently sneaking in some extra rest for him. If everything goes as planned, they’ll soon utilize a six-man rotation following Kodai Senga’s return.

Mets sent LHP Joey Lucchesi outright to Triple-A Syracuse.

Lucchesi will stick around with New York as emergency starting pitching depth after passing through waivers unclaimed earlier this week. The 31-year-old southpaw made one start earlier this year for the Mets and holds a respectable 4.14 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 383/133 K/BB ratio across 388 2/3 innings (80 appearances, 76 starts) in the big leagues dating back to 2018.
David Peterson

Mets activated LHP David Peterson off the paternity list.

Even with no games Monday, the Mets had to activate Peterson after he was away from the team for the maximum three games. The left-hander will likely start for the Mets shortly after the conclusion of the break.

Mets selected Oklahoma State OF Carson Benge with the No. 19 selection of the 2024 MLB Draft.

Benge also pitches, and he posted a 44/11 K/BB with a 3.16 ERA as a relief option for the Cowboys. The reason he’s going this high, however, is he’s a hitter with a chance for four plus tools who hit .335/.444/.665 with 18 homers and 10 stolen bases over 61 games for the Big 12 club. The outfielder did undergo Tommy John surgery before his freshman campaign, but that injury hasn’t changed his offensive outlook. Benge has a chance to be an above-average regular, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was a top-of-the-order hitter in the next two-to-three years.
Jose Iglesias

Jose Iglesias went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk on Sunday against the Rockies.

The Rockies never retired Iglesias in this contest and he continued to drive the bottom of the Mets’ order towards a comeback that would never come to fruition. Overall, this has been a dream-like six week stretch for Iglesias. He thought his major league career could’ve been over after not making the Mets out of spring training, but he took his AAA assignment anyway. Then he got called up on May 31st and is hitting .380 with a .999 OPS in 30 games since with fantastic defense. Oh, and he also released a hit song, “OMG”, that has become these Mets’ rallying cry. It’s unlikely he stays this hot with his free-swinging nature, but he’s playing nearly every day and refuses to get out.
Jose Quintana

Jose Quintana allowed five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings on Sunday against the Rockies. He walked one and struck out eight in defeat.

This game was a tale of two Quintanas. On one hand, he continued with his curveball-focused approach and tied his season-high with eight strikeouts. That curveball and his changeup each forced five swings-and-misses and looked great. On the other hand, he allowed four home runs for the first time in his career and the last one to Michael Toglia came on a hanging curveball. Still, this pitch-mix adjustment has vaulted Quintana into the streamer tier.
Kodai Senga

NYM Starting Pitcher #34

Kodai Senga (shoulder, triceps) yielded on run in 4 1/3 innings in his latest rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Syracuse.

Senga threw 66 pitches, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out three. The next step hasn’t been decided, but it’s possible the Mets could deem him ready for his season debut coming out of the All-Star break. The club will move to a six-man rotation upon his return.
Starling Marte

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that recovery on the bone bruise in Starling Marte’s right knee has been “slow.”

Mendoza noted that Marte has been receiving daily treatment, but isn’t on the precipice of starting baseball activities. The outfielder was expected to miss at least four weeks with the contusion, but there’s a very good chance that Marte doesn’t return to the Mets until sometime in August.
