DET Left Fielder #21

Mark Canha (wrist) sat out Sunday’s game against the Dodgers and is undergoing treatment on his injured right wrist.

Canha noted on Sunday that the injury has actually been bothering him for a while now and got to the point where he was unable to swing the bat with much ferocity. The Tigers are hopeful that the four days off over the All-Star break will be enough to alleviate the issue and allow him to return to action for Friday’s second-half opener against the Blue Jays.

Tigers selected Harvard Westlake HS (CA) SS Bryce Rainer with the No. 11 pick of the 2024 MLB Draft.

Harvard Westlake has provided several quality players to the highest level, and Rainer obviously has a chance to be next. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound shortstop has a chance for four plus tools, and three of those -- hit, power and speed -- carry with it fantasy relevancy. The arm won’t show up in box scores, but it does make him likely to stick at shortstop; or at least a switch won’t have to do with his skill set. There’s obvious risk with a prep bat and Rainer won’t make an immediate impact, but the upside here is a hitter who can hit around .300 with 25 homers and a similar number of steals. A lot to like there.
Justyn-Henry Malloy

DET Left Fielder #44

Justyn-Henry Malloy delivered a game-tying single as a pinch-hitter in the ninth as the Tigers came back to beat the Dodgers 4-3 on Sunday.

Zach McKinstry tripled and Malloy drove him in. Malloy then came around to score on a pair of errors, both of them coming on sac bunts. Malloy, who was out of the lineup today for the first time in six games, is batting .219/.309/.417 through 110 plate appearances. That’s not too bad, but he needs to pick it up some or risk getting sent down when Kerry Carpenter returns or maybe if the Tigers want to give Spencer Torkelson another chance.

Javier Báez (back) is not in the starting lineup for Sunday’s contest against the Dodgers.

The shortstop was removed from the game Saturday with soreness in his back, and it’s not surprising to see Detroit not risk further injury with the All-Star break beginning Monday. Zack McKinstry is the starting shortstop and will hit seventh
Beau Brieske

DET Starting Pitcher #4

Beau Brieske will be the opener for Sunday’s game against the Dodgers.

Brieske has the ability to work multiple innings, but won’t be able to go the necessary five to qualify for a victory even if he does leave with a lead. The 26-year-old right-hander will go a few frames, and it won’t be a surprise if Kenta Maeda received the bulk of the work against his former team.

DET Shortstop #28

Javier Báez was forced to leave Saturday’s ballgame against the Dodgers due to soreness in his back.

The 31-year-old shortstop was lifted from Saturday’s game when the Tigers took the field in the top half of the sixth inning after his back tightened up on him. It doesn’t sound like it should be a long-term concern though, so Báez should be considered day-to-day.
Mark Canha

Mark Canha was removed from Saturday’s contest against the Dodgers due to soreness in his left wrist.

Speculation ran rampant as Canha was pulled in the fourth inning that he may have been involved in a trade, but it’s an injury that forced his early exit. The Tigers don’t sound overly concerned about the injury, but don’t be surprised if the 35-year-old gets an extra day to rest on Sunday with the All-Star break coming up.
Colt Keith

DET Third Baseman #33

Colt Keith went 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, and a walk to lead the Tigers to an 11-9 win over the Dodgers on Saturday.

Keith has been on an excellent run at the plate over the last month. He another outstanding day on Saturday. With two runners on in the second, he doubled to bring home both runs. After drawing a walk in the fourth inning, he knocked a base hit in the sixth to reach for the third time. And with a runner on and two outs, down by two runs in the bottom of the ninth, Keith took Evan Phillips deep to tie the game. The 22-year-old second baseman is hitting .253/.310/.396 with nine homers, 37 RBI, and five steals across 313 plate appearances.
Andy Ibanez

Andy Ibáñez went 1-for-2 with a solo homer and a walk against the Dodgers on Saturday.

Ibáñez drew a walk in the third inning, then took Justin Wrobleski deep for a solo homer in the fifth before leaving for a pinch-hitter in the seventh when the Dodgers brought a right-hander in out of the bullpen. The 31-year-old infielder is hitting .285/.321/.438 with four homers, 22 runs scored, and 21 RBI across 140 plate appearances.
Keider Montero

DET Starting Pitcher #54

Keider Montero allowed five runs with four strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Saturday.

Montero allowed a leadoff triple to Shohei Ohtani in the first inning. Ohtani would come in to score on a groundout. A walk and two base hits loaded the bases in the third inning before Montero walked in a second run for the Dodgers. Ohtani later took him deep for a solo homer in the fifth. The Dodgers would bring two more runs in on a walk, double, and a base hit. Montero’s day would be done after five innings. He struck out four. The 24-year-old right-hander holds a 5.47 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and a 23/10 K/BB ratio across 26 1/3 innings.
