CHC Relief Pitcher #66

Julian Merryweather (shoulder) fired a scoreless inning on Monday in a minor league rehab appearance in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League.

Merryweather has gotten through three minor league rehab outings so far without any issues and figures to be ready to return to Chicago’s bullpen mix shortly after the All-Star break. The hard-throwing 32-year-old reliever has been out since mid-April due to a right shoulder strain.
Mike Tauchman

CHC Left Fielder #40

Mike Tauchman (groin) started a minor league rehab assignment this week in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League.

Tauchman has been out since mid-June recovering from a Grade 2 left groin strain. The 33-year-old veteran outfielder is probably going to need at least a couple additional rehab contests in the upper minors to get back up to speed before returning to Chicago’s outfield mix.
Edwin Escobar

FA Starting Pitcher #44

Cubs released LHP Edwin Escobar.

Escobar signed a minor league contract last November with the Cubs, after spending the previous five years pitching overseas in Japan, and didn’t end up making it back to Chicago. The 32-year-old southpaw, who hasn’t appeared in the majors since making 25 relief appearances during the 2016 campaign for the Guardians, posted a serviceable 4.86 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 47/33 K/BB ratio across 46 1/3 innings (31 appearances) for Triple-A Iowa.
Daniel Palencia

CHC Relief Pitcher #48

Cubs optioned RHP Daniel Palencia to Triple-A Iowa.

Palencia was up with Chicago for their final handful of contests prior to the All-Star break after missing time earlier this season due to a right shoulder ailment. The 24-year-old has made 34 relief appearances for the Cubs over the last two years.
Jesus Tinoco

CHC Relief Pitcher #59

Cubs acquired RHP Jesus Tinoco from the Royals for cash considerations.

Tinoco provides the Cubs with some additional relief depth coming out of the All-Star break back at Triple-A Iowa. The 29-year-old right-hander struggled earlier this year in nine outings for the Rangers, but holds a respectable 4.58 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 61/47 K/BB ratio across 76 2/3 innings (57 appearances) in the big leagues dating back to 2019.
Cam Smith

Cubs selected Florida State 3B Cam Smith with the No. 14 selection of the 2024 MLB Draft.

Smith saw his stock increase substantially in 2024 after registering a 1.142 OPS and 16 homers for the Seminoles in 2024. A right-handed hitter, Smith doesn’t have the prototypical power of a top prospect at third base, but he does have a chance to hit for a high average with a line-drive stroke and an excellent approach at the plate. He’s not bereft of power either; with the type of pop that could provide up to 20 homers in his best years. Smith is also an excellent defender, which could help make him move quickly through the system. He’s more high-floor than high-ceiling, but there’s definitely enough upside to suggest he can be a fantasy starter someday.
Christopher Morel

CHC Center Fielder #5

Christopher Morel went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in an 8-3 win over the Cardinals on Sunday.

Morel took Miles Mikolas deep in the sixth inning and then Andrew Kittredge yard in the eighth. He now has 18 RBI and 50 RBI on the season, which has allowed him to remain fantasy-relevant despite having a .202/.303/.387 slash line. Morel is a below-average defender and will likely never hit for a high batting average, so there remains the risk that the Cubs will eventually see him as a part-time player; however, his immense power and speed upside will always intrigue fantasy managers if you can withstand his poor average.
Pete Crow-Armstrong

CHC Left Fielder #52

Pete Crow-Armstrong went 2-for-3 with a walk, two home runs, and a stolen base on Sunday against the Cardinals.

Even with those two home runs, Crow-Armstrong has just three on the season to go along with a .203/.253/.329 slash line. He does have 17 steals on the season, and that’s where the vast majority of his fantasy appeal will come from because he doesn’t figure to hit enough, at least this season, to be a difference-maker in other categories.
Jameson Taillon

CHC Starting Pitcher #50

Jameson Taillon allowed three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings in a win over the Cardinals on Sunday.

Taillon allowed just two extra-base hits but nine hard-hit baseballs on the day. He posted an underwhelming 13 percent whiff rate and 22 percent CSW on the day, but will certainly take the win. The veteran has a solid 3.10 ERA on the season and could be an attractive name at the trade deadline. He’s a risky streamer against the Diamondbacks on Sunday after the All-Star break, but he’s pitching well enough to take the gamble.
Hunter Bigge

CHC Relief Pitcher #47

Cubs optioned RHP Hunter Bigge to Triple-A Iowa.

Bigge will head down with Javier Assad remaining on the active roster. The 26-year-old allowed one run in 2 1/3 innings over three appearances after his promotion last week.
