The Boston Red Sox announced that Nick Pivetta, Brayan Bello, and Kutter Crawford would start their three-game series against the Dodgers this weekend.

Nick Pivetta will start on Friday, Brayan Bello will start on Saturday and then Kutter Crawford will start on Sunday. Each can perform well against the Dodgers without a fully healthy lineup, but there is significant risk, especially with Bello.

Red Sox released RHP Sal Romano.

Romano, who signed a minor league pact with Boston back in late April, hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since the 2021 season and was cut loose earlier this week by the Red Sox after posting a bloated 9.24 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 15/13 K/BB ratio across 25 1/3 innings (15 appearances) for Triple-A Worcester.
Jarren Duran

Jarren Duran clobbered a go-ahead two-run homer to power the American League to a 5-3 victory over the National League during Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game at Globe Life Field.

Duran came off the bench to slingshot the American League ahead with a tape-measure 413-foot moonshot to right field off Reds ace Hunter Greene in the fifth inning, which was enough for him to earn him MVP Award honors. The 27-year-old outfielder’s metamorphosis into an upper-echelon fantasy contributor, tallying 47 extra-base hits, including 10 home runs, and 22 stolen bases through 95 games, has been a big reason why the Red Sox find themselves in the playoff race coming out of the All-Star break.
Naoyuki Uwasawa

Red Sox sent RHP Naoyuki Uwasawa outright to Triple-A Worcester.

Uwasawa passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment last week by the Red Sox. The 30-year-old righty made a pair of relief outings for Boston back in late April and will presumably stick around as emergency pitching depth the rest of the year.
Braden Montgomery

Red Sox selected Texas A&M OF Braden Montgomery with the No. 12 pick of the 2024 MLB Draft.

Montgomery spent his first two years at Stanford and put up strong numbers as a Cardinal, but things escalated in his year with the Aggies as seen in 27 homers and a .322/.454/.733 slash over 295 plate appearances. He’s a switch-hitter with big-time power in his bat, and he’s a patient hitter who is willing to draw free passes. He does have some contact issues so he may be more of an on-base play more than a hitter who provides a high average. He’s also only an average runner who isn’t likely to steal a huge number of bases. Montgomery also will be coming off a broken right ankle, but assuming good health, he’s one of the better power players from this draft class.
Jarren Duran

Jarren Duran finished 4-for-5 as the Red Sox edged the Royals 5-4 on Sunday.

Included was his 27th double of the year. He’s tied for third in the majors there while also sporting a league-high 10 triples. Duran will take with him a .284/.342/.477 line as he heads to his first All-Star Game.
Brayan Bello

BOS Starting Pitcher #66

Brayan Bello yielded three runs in 6 1/3 innings Sunday in a victory over the Royals.

The Red Sox had the pen going relatively early in this one, but Bello wound up pitching into the seventh and winning a third straight start. He closes out the first half 10-5 in spite of a 5.32 ERA. Meanwhile, poor Kutter Crawford is 6-7 with a 3.04 ERA while pitching for the same club.
Kenley Jansen

BOS Relief Pitcher #74

Kenley Jansen got a two-inning save, allowing one run in the process, against the Royals on Sunday.

Jansen struck out the side against the top of the order in the eighth before running into some trouble in the ninth. Still, he held on for his 19th save. The run was the first he’d allowed since June 12.
Connor Wong

BOS Catcher #12

Connor Wong is not in the starting lineup for Sunday’s game against the Royals.

Wong will sit for a second consecutive game to end the first half of the campaign. Reese McGuire will hit eighth and handle catching duties against Brady Singer and Kansas City while Wong gets another breather.
Dominic Smith

BOS First Baseman #2

Dominic Smith went 2-for-4 with two runs driven in against the Royals on Saturday.

Both RBI for Smith came in the third, as he hit a two-run single off a surprisingly ineffective Seth Lugo to extend Boston’s lead to 4-0. The former top prospect has not been terribly effective thus far, as this solid day still has his slash at .226/.315/.345 with one game left before the All-Star break.
